Downtown library goes Hollywood
Well, they’ve taken the Santa Clauses down at the main branch of the New Hanover County Public Library, 201 Chestnut St.
In its place, in the entranceway display cases, the library has posted a film-related exhibit, with movie posters, memorabilia and film books from the collection.
All of the films have a North Carolina link, from “The Swan” (1956) with Grace Kelly, Alec Guinness and Louis Jourdain (filmed partly at the Vanderbilts’ Biltmore estate in Asheville) to “Dirty Dancing” (which was partly filmed at Lake Lure and Asheville’s famous Grove Park Inn) to “Love Field” (starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Dennis Haysbert) and ”Space Jam” (which, after all, co-stars Wilmington native Michael Jordan).
For “Sleeping With the Enemy,” the library’s posted several stills from the Star-News’ old collection, including a shot of Julia Roberts on location at the old New Hanover Connty Fairgr0unds off Carolina Beach Road. They also have several terrific color Polaroids of the famous “Sleeping With the Enemy” house, built at Fort Fisher, then demolished after shooting wrapped.
Among the titles on display: Jean Nance’s “Cinematic Wilmington” and Jenny Henderson’s “North Carolina Filmography.”
