All about Accidentally on Purpose

Accidentally on Purpose, the new CBS Monday night comedy, will be joining the successful lineup of How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory this fall, Jenna Elfman and the rest of the cast spoke to the press today.

Elfman, Billie in the tv series, a movie critic whose one night stand with a much younger man, Zack (Jon Foster), results in her pregnancy, and Zack becoming a part of her life. The show looks at the difference between Billie, who has a set career and plenty of responsibilities, and the young, slackerish Zack, who has no responsibilities – until the baby. This led to a reporter asking the panel if Billie, as part of her job, had seen the semi-similar Knocked Up. The panelists laughed, but were also quick to point out that Accidentally on Purpose is based on film critic Mary Pols' book, which tells her true story – and that in the book, she even writes about seeing Knocked Up and comparing her life to it.

The first season of Accidentally on Purpose would cover the duration of Billie's pregnancy, with standalone stories told within three sections of the season – covering the three trimesters of her pregnancy. As for where it could go in future seasons, Lonow said there was still plenty of material to tell in the story of Billie coming from "a sophisticated world, and [these] young slacker guys invading her space. That's what the show will continue to be about."

Nicholas Wright performs Zack's best friend(Davis) says the guys', "Priorities aren't straight. They don't have careers by any stretch of the imagination. We spend our time playing videogames and other useless activities." [Grant Theft Auto is referenced heavily in the pilot] As for Billie and her mature friends, Wright says he and Foster's characters are, "A great counterpoint to those girls."
